About me
I was born in Kolozsvár (Cluj Napoca, Romania) in 1969 and I was babtized in the Catholic
church in the town's center that is behind King Mátyás's statue. King Mátyás was also born in
Kolozsvár and when I was a kid my family visited King Mátyás's birth house which was a museum
in memory of him. So I started life in Erdély which is a part of Romania since WWI, but we
lived in a Hungarian community with lots of relatives and friends. Hungary lost 2/3 of it's
traditional 1000+ year old territory at the end of WWI by the treaty of Trianon. Hungary
continuously held these lands since 896 AD but after an agreement which some say was forced
on to Hungary at the end of WWI the 1000+ year old land was given away to neighboring
countries. Along with the land, 2/3 of the Hungarian population was also given away to
neighboring countries by this agreement. (See: "Tragic Faith
of Hungary") The biggest chunk of the lost territories of Hungary was Transilvania where
I was born and this land with all its peoples was given to Romania. In Kolozsvár I attended
Hungarian kindergartens and schools as I was growing up and I finished the first two grades
there before our family fortunately moved to Hungary.
For the third grade I attended a school in the town of Csillaghegy a suburb of Budapest. Our
family was blessed with a move to Hungary from Transilvania, many other Hungarian families
could not make this move. Later we lived in Pest Erzsébet and I went to Attila street
elementary school for the fourth and fifth grades. I was terrible at learning the mandatory
Russian language that was thought in the fifth grade way back in 1980-1981.
In the summer of 1981 my father started his journey to America through Austria and he took me
with him for the adventure! Living in Hungary was much better than living in Romania but a
communist political system was in power in Hungary as well. At the beginning of the 1980s it
was not showing any signs of change that my father could tell therefore my father made the
risky move to leave 1/2 of our family behind with our house and all our possessions and
emigrate to the USA.
Two or three years later my mother and my brother followed us to America and our family was
reunited in Los Angeles, most of our monetary values never made it out. My dad started over
from scratch in a new country with a new language in 1982 spring when my father and I arrived
to America. I continued school in the second half of the seventh grade at Paradise
Intermediate School.
When I arrived to America I did not speak any English and it was very difficult at first to
get used to the new language and culture. Luckily I quickly learned the language and after a
year I was able to speak it well. I was then able to help my father with his english language
by occationally translating things for him. Today I fell that I have to practice my native
Hungarian so that I won't forget even the smallest parts of it.
After I finished high school I voluntarily served in the US Air Force for four years as a
security policeman which is simply the Air Force's version of regular police.
I had lots of fun during my military service. It was through this valuable experience that I
was able to travel to Europe and take a thirty day European vacation. Also through the
service I received educational benefits (GI-Bill) to help pay for college education.
By my 22nd birthday I have been fortunate enough to have traveled in nine different
countries. (Romania, Hungary, Austria, USA, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal).
In 1990 during a thirty day vacation I traveled in most of Western Europe with the help of
this Euro Rail pass, this
U.S. Passport and 1800 dollars of spending money. This is still one of my best adventures
and a great eye-opening experience.
